Here in Florida we don’t need to worry about shoveling snow but we do need to take some steps to prepare for fall and winter.
The blazing heat and sun are becoming somewhat bearable. Hurricane season is almost over. Time to start fixing everything up.
1. Yard Work
It’ll be time to start weeding and adding new mulch to your yard. Good to get this done before anything becomes overgrown and out of control.
2. Home Updates
The summer heat and sun can really do some damage on the outside of your home. This is the perfect time to fix the roof, any leaks and paint.
You’ll probably want to open up the windows to let in that fresh breeze. Make sure all of your screens are good to go. Check for rips because that’s exactly how those critters get in.
Bring in a pest man to spray before it even becomes an issue. Better to be prepared than have some uninvited guests.
A fresh coat of paint always helps. And as Halloween approaches you might consider painting the ceiling of your porch a “haint blue.” This is a sky blue color you may have seen around. It makes for a pretty view and it is supposed to deter restless spirits.
3. Bring Out The Heat
The nights are cooling off and, though most of our Florida homes don’t have fireplaces, it is easy to put a fire pit outside.
There are some great designs available and this could be a fun DIY project.
Check the gas and make sure you have a full tank of propane for grilling and anything else you might need it for.
4. Conduct An Energy Audit
According to Forbes.com “a trained auditor can assess your home’s current energy efficiency and give you a list of recommended improvements you can make.” For a do-it-yourself energy audit at Energy.gov.
Fall is a great time to kick start any maintenance you put off during the summer.
No need to wait for spring and get started now!
